🐾 Health Issues

Curly Coated Retrievers are generally a robust, healthy breed, with an average life expectancy of 9–14 years. Through responsible breeding programs and attentive care, we aim to continue improving the breed’s overall health and longevity.

As with all purebred dogs, there are certain health issues that prospective owners should be aware of. It’s essential to discuss these with your breeder and ensure that appropriate health testing and clearances have been conducted before bringing a Curly into your home.

Key Health Considerations

Hip Dysplasia
A condition where the hip joint doesn’t fit properly into the hip socket, potentially leading to arthritis or mobility issues. Responsible breeders screen their breeding stock using hip scoring schemes to reduce the risk of passing on this condition.

Eye Problems
These can include inherited cataracts and other issues that may affect vision. Regular eye exams and clearances are important to maintain breed health.

Exercise-Induced Collapse (EIC)
A condition that can cause affected dogs to collapse after intense exercise. It is more common in some retriever breeds and should be discussed with your breeder.

Bloat (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus)
A serious, potentially life-threatening condition where the stomach twists, trapping gas and cutting off blood supply. Knowing the symptoms and acting quickly can save lives. Feeding smaller meals and avoiding vigorous exercise immediately after eating may help reduce risk.

Epilepsy
A neurological disorder that can cause seizures. It can be managed with veterinary care, but it’s important to ask breeders about any family history of the condition.

Supporting Responsible Breeding

When considering adding a Curly Coated Retriever to your family, always ask the breeder to provide:

  • Copies of hip score certificates

  • Eye test results from a qualified veterinary ophthalmologist

  • Information on EIC testing where available

  • Health history of the puppy’s parents, including any known issues with bloat or epilepsy

By choosing a responsible breeder who prioritises health testing and sound breeding practices, you are helping to safeguard the future of this wonderful, versatile breed.
